How It Works

  1. Book Selection & Voting:
Every two months, we will vote on the next book to read. The book list will be compiled from recommendations submitted by club members, ensuring a variety of genres and themes that appeal to a wide audience. Books will be selected with an emphasis on accessibility, including options that are available at local libraries in print or digital formats (e.g., e-books or audiobooks via OverDrive/Libby). Voting will be conducted via an online survey, where members can choose from a list of nominated books. Once the book is selected, participants will have two months to read it and engage in the discussion.

  2. Discussion Format:
Instead of live meetings, the book club discussions will happen in an online discussion board. This allows participants to contribute their thoughts and insights over a period of time, rather than on a set date. Discussion threads will be posted at the start of each book, providing members with a space to share their thoughts, reactions, and questions. Participants can reply to the discussion thread, comment on others' thoughts, and engage in deeper conversations around key themes of the book.

  3. Book Discussions Focus:
Our goal is not only to read and discuss books but to foster meaningful conversations. We encourage all members to share their perspectives, whether they finished the book or not, and to explore how the book's messages resonate with their own experiences or offer new insights into life and community.

  4. Timeline and Flexibility:

    • Bi-Monthly Schedule: Every two months, we will announce the new book selection. Members can take their time reading, ensuring they have ample opportunity to finish the book and participate in discussions, even with busy schedules.

    • Asynchronous Participation: Discussions will remain open for the entire two-month period, so members can join in when it’s convenient for them.

  5. Accessibility & Community:

Books chosen for the club will be available through local libraries (both physical and digital               formats) to make them accessible to everyone. This ensures that the book club is open to               people from all backgrounds and circumstances, including those who might have limited                 access to paid services like Audible or Kindle Unlimited.

Club Member Expectations

To ensure a positive and enjoyable experience for all members, we ask everyone in the Unity in Words book club to adhere to the following expectations:

    • While participation is encouraged, there is no pressure to respond to every thread—join in as your time allows.

  • Commitment to the Reading Schedule

    • Make an effort to read the selected book (or as much of it as you can) within the allotted time.

    • Stay engaged in the discussion board throughout the reading period.

  • Positive and Inclusive Atmosphere

    • Promote a welcoming space for all members, regardless of background, reading preferences, or familiarity with book club themes.

    • Focus on contributing to a supportive and inspiring community.

By meeting these expectations, we can ensure that Unity in Words remains an enjoyable, engaging, and meaningful space for everyone. Happy reading!

Book Guidelines

To ensure an enjoyable and accessible reading experience for all members of the Unity in Words book club, our book selections follow these guidelines:

  1. Accessibility:

    • Books should ideally be available to rent through local libraries or e-book/audiobook services to ensure affordability for members.

  2. Length:

    • Books should be a maximum of approximately 600 pages to allow for manageable reading within our bi-monthly schedule.

  3. Themes:

    • We prefer books that are inspiring or lighthearted/comedic, promoting uplifting and engaging discussions.

  4. Member Involvement:

    • The next book will be selected through a vote by members from a curated list of recommendations.
