Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) can be difficult to explain—especially to someone hearing about it for the first time. That’s because FND doesn’t always fit into simple categories, and no two experiences are exactly the same.
At Not Defined by FND, we believe something powerful:
💙 The best explanations come from the people who live it.
That’s why we’re inviting the FND community—warriors, supporters, and allies—to share their own ways of explaining FND.
💬 Why This Matters
When someone asks, “What is FND?”, the answer can take many forms.
Some people use analogies. Some keep it simple. Some share deeply personal experiences. And some combine all of the above.
There is no single “correct” explanation—only meaningful ones.
By sharing different perspectives, we can:
Help others better understand FND
Reduce stigma and confusion
Empower people to find language that feels right to them
Build a stronger, more connected community
🧠 What Is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)?
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a condition where there is a problem with how the brain and body send and receive signals.
It’s important to understand:
The brain and nervous system are usually structurally intact
But the communication between them isn’t working as expected
This can lead to a wide range of neurological symptoms, including:
Movement difficulties
Seizure-like episodes (non-epileptic seizures)
Speech or vision changes
Sensory symptoms
Fatigue and more
FND is real, complex, and deeply personal—and so is how we explain it.
🎹 Common Ways People Explain FND
Many people use analogies to help others understand FND in a relatable way. For example:
🎹 “FND is like an out-of-tune piano—the instrument is there, but the signals aren’t quite in sync.”
☎️ “It’s like the game of telephone—the message gets scrambled along the way.”
⚡ “It’s like a communication glitch between the brain and body.”
These metaphors can make complex ideas easier to understand—but your voice matters just as much.
